What is PNR Number?

PNR number is the unique ten digit code that is assigned to the traveler. Passenger Name Record or PNR is very important as it reveals the whole information regarding concerned train. It is given to those who did the booking either online or by physically at the station itself. You can find this number printed on the top left corner of your ticket. One can get to know about the current status of their railway reservation simply with the help of the PNR number given to him or her. This special number is quite useful even if you lost the ticket, so whenever buy the ticket write it on some paper. When you show the PNR Number to T.C. (Ticket Collector), he will match it with his railway chart; if it does then he will allow you to sit.

Methods to Check Railway PNR Status:

There are several methods through one can check his/her PNR Status within a few minutes, for example: you can check your PNR Status online or simply with a text message. Below we are going to mention a few methods that can be used for checking PNR Status of IRCTC, Yatra, Rail and others.

Check PNR Status Online:

Online method is the simplest of all. All you need to do is to enter your PNR Number in the box given at the top of the webpage and Hit the “Get PNR Status” button. As soon as you hit the button, your ongoing status will be displayed on your desktop screen.

Know IRCTC PNR Status through SMS:

The other method is familiar to you all. It’s an SMS service offered by Indian railways for PNR Enquiry. Simply use your mobile phone to get to know the PNR status through a simple message. Following are four numbers that can be used to send SMS to know the latest update of your PNR status.
  • Type PNR <10 digit PNR Number> and send it to 54959. For example PNR 8710156982
  • Type PNR <10 digit PNR Number> and send it to 139
  • Type PNR <10 digit PNR Number> and send it to 5676747
  • Type PNR <10 digit PNR Number> and send it to 57886

PNR Enquiry using Phone call:

139 are the number you need to dial in order to know the PNR status of your ticket. It’s a toll free number, so you need to follow the instruction given by the IVR system to know the status of your ticket.

PNR Enquiry through Mobile Applications:

If you are fed up of Checking PNR Status again and again on your PC, then no need to worry anymore! Now you can do it with the help mobile applications available for your iOS, Android, Symbian and Windows Smartphone. You can get these apps in Apple iTunes, Google Play, Windows Phone Apps and Ovi Store.

Indian Railways Ticket PNR Status Explained:

Checking the Ticket Status is easy but many times people got stuck because they do not understand the meaning of it. There is a generous bunch of people who take out the report of PNR number but fail to understand what does that page is trying to tell them. With the invention of the internet and now with mobile applications, there is a visible augmentation in people using these methods to know about the Ticket Status. The process of knowing the status of the ticket has become simple but still few people struggle a lot to know the details of it. Some abbreviations elaborated below will help you to understand the status of your ticket.

CAN/MOD: If these massage appear on your screen while PNR Enquiry then it means your ticket has been cancelled. This will appear after you have cancelled the ticket yourself or through an agent. After cancellation if you check you PNR status you will see these abbreviations and it indicates your ticket is cancelled and you cannot travel with that ticket now.

CNF: While PNR Enquiry if you notice these abbreviations; it means your ticket is confirmed or your seat is confirmed. Most probably the coach and the seat number will be allocated you and if you can’t find the seat then you need to have a word with the ticket collector or station master. Mostly the seat and coach number is given to passenger after chart preparation.

RAC: The full form of this abbreviation is “Reservation Against Cancellation”. It means your seat is not confirmed yet but you will be having sitting facility in class of your choice. But the good part is you can travel with your co-passenger by sharing one seat. Due to last minute cancellations which are closer to the travel date, a RAC holder will get the seat. RAC holder can travel by sitting in the two side chairs. If the berth gets available due to cancellation then he can get the birth while the other RAC holder will occupy the tow side chair and convert it into berth. A RAC holder can also travel in the AC coach.

WL: The waiting list is abbreviated as WL. This status means you don’t have any confirm berth or seating arrangement. If in any case if there is sufficient place or the RAC holder cancels his ticket then WL holder will get the seat. Railway officials decide the number of WL tickets and after a certain number of requests; they do not accept further requests and responds with REGRET status. This means one cannot purchase tickets after receiving such greeting messages. In case if you have booked your ticket online then it gets cancelled automatically once the chart is prepared.

RAC/WL: These tickets have two numbers - WL35/W30, WL25/RAC15. The very 1st number shows the ticket status when it is bought whereas 2nd number shows the ongoing position. Thus, WL35/W30 means that when you bought the ticket you were on the 35 waiting list and due to 5 cancellation your position slide down to 30.

CK: This abbreviation denotes that you have booked your ticket under Tatkal booking. As per the current rule of Indian railways, you can book a tatkal ticket from window 24 hours prior to traveling. In case, if your ticket gets confirmed then you will get a seat and coach number with the emblem CK.

CKWL: This status stands for any ticket which is in waiting list under the tatkal booking. The main difference between general and tatkal waiting is that when a tatkal waiting get confirmed, you will get a confirmed seat whereas general waiting moves into the RAC category.

PQWL: This refers to the Pooled Quota Waiting List. It is one among the many Waiting List types which appear on your tickets. You will find this symbol if your ticket is booked through railway quota.

GNWL: This stands for general waiting list. The ticket must come with CNF status to use the ticket for travel. You can’t travel with ticket showing GNWL status. If have booked your ticket from station then you may need to travel in general compartments in some circumstances.

REGRET/WL: This means no more booking is allowed. Normally, you will see this status when booking your ticket.
